Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between coaching, therapy, and medical nutrition therapy?

Recovery coaching is present based and does not focus on healing from the past. Coaches are not qualified to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Recovery coaching is focused on providing you with support in the here and now, not with the why.

Therapy differs from recovery coaching in that you must have a license to provide clinical services. Therapists are able to diagnose an array of mental health concerns and are the best equipped to delve into the underlying causes of behaviors. Therapists are the ones who help you unpack the why and explore the origin of your eating disorder, however, don’t always have the availability or capacity to do community-based work.

Medial nutrition therapy (MNT) provides a full nutrition evaluation, nutrition diagnosis, development of a treatment plan, and nutrition counseling. MNT is sometimes referred to as nutrition counseling; these terms can be used interchangeably. This service is best for those who have a diagnosis that needs specific nutrition interventions and treatment, such as eating disorders, diabetes, auto-immune disorders, etc. MNT can only be rendered by a registered dietitian (RD) and is further regulated by each individual state.

Nutrition coaching is not the same as MNT/nutrition counseling. Coaching provides general nutrition education and support for an individual or group’s identified needs, and does not manage any disease states with specific nutrition interventions. As this service is not limited to RD licensure in individual states, any person worldwide can receive nutrition coaching.

It is important to note that nutrition coaching is not regulated by a federal or state licensing board, thus, anyone could call themselves a ‘nutrition coach,' ‘nutritionist,’ ‘health coach,’ etc. At Beloved, we take pride in that our nutrition coaching is facilitated by a Registered Dietitian. This ensures you are receiving the most competent and ethical care available.

What are the benefits of having a coach and/or a therapist/dietitian?

Recovery coaches offer services that are meant to complement traditional therapeutic care. Meaning, recovery coaching is about supporting you or your loved one in following through on the commitments made in therapy, not take the place of it. Often times, treatment team members are unable to accompany their clients to community based exposures or provide in home services, and that’s where we come in. Recovery coaches are another support for you or your loved one to lean on in recovery.

Do you accept insurance?

No, recovery coaching is not a covered service under most (almost all) health insurance plans. However, for MNT/nutrition counseling, we accept HSA or FSA as payment, and can also provide a superbill for you to file with your insurance company.

We will file out of network claims on your behalf through a third party service: Reimbursify. Should this be something you are interested in, for either recovery coaching (it’s worth a shot) and nutrition counseling, please let your provider know.

Good Faith Estimate: As of January 1, 2022, all healthcare providers are required to provide estimates for the costs of services if you are not using health insurance. A Good Faith Estimate will be provided by your registered dietitian as requested. While it is difficult to know the number of nutrition counseling sessions you will need, we strive to be as transparent as possible about the cost of our services during this process.

Who is eligible for services?

Children, adolescents, and adults are eligible for recovery coaching services at Beloved. However, if you are or have a child who is 17 years old or younger, or 18+ years old and still in high school, it is required that you have an established therapist and/or dietitian.

For adults with disordered eating and body image issues, it may not be required of you to have a therapist and/or dietitian. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis during your discovery call.

Additionally, If you are currently seeing our registered dietitian for nutrition services, you are unable to receive recovery coaching services from that provider. However, you are able to work with another one of our other coaches.
