Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between coaching, therapy, and nutrition counseling?
Recovery coaching is present based and does not focus on healing from the past. Coaches are not qualified to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Recovery coaching is focused on providing you with support in the here and now, not with the why.
Therapy differs from recovery coaching in that you must have a license to provide clinical services. Therapists are able to diagnose an array of mental health concerns and are the best equipped to delve into the underlying causes of behaviors. Therapists are the ones who help you unpack the why and explore the origin of your eating disorder, however, don’t always have the availability or capacity to do community based work.
Coaching is not the same as nutrition counseling, as nutrition counseling requires a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). Nutrition counseling can provide you with personalized nutrition recommendations based on your health information, whereas coaching is to support you in solely implementing these recommendations, not creating them.
What are the benefits of having a coach and/or a therapist/dietitian?
Recovery coaches offer services that are meant to complement traditional therapeutic care. Meaning, recovery coaching is about supporting you or your loved one in following through on the commitments made in therapy, not take the place of it. Often times, treatment team members are unable to accompany their clients to community based exposures or provide in home services, and that’s where we come in. Recovery coaches are another support for you or your loved one to lean on in recovery.
